About Company

Detroit Renewable Energy (DRE) is Detroits comprehensive, integrated renewable energy company. We transform the citys municipal solid waste into “green” electricity and steam for district energy, proudly serving large corporations, hospitals, government buildings, small businesses and leading nonprofit organizations. We are a trusted employer to hundreds of families and provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective energy to our customers. Detroit Renewable Energy has invested over $120 million in Detroit over the past five years to improve the performance, reliability, and safety of Detroit Thermal, the citys steam distribution loop, and Detroit Renewable Power, the citys energy-from-waste facility.  We are making Detroits power and waste infrastructure cleaner and greener for the 21st century. As such, Detroit Renewable Energy is an essential part of our citys ongoing renaissance.

Detroit Renewable Energy LLC is a consortium of renewable-energy generation and distribution companies committed to providing the City of Detroit with safe, reliable and cost-effective solutions for clean energy and waste disposal. Our independent subsidiaries include Detroit Thermal, Detroit Renewable Power, Hamtramck Energy Services, and Detroit Renewable Cooling.  Detroit Renewable Energy was formed in 2010 with the objective of improving the operating efficiency, safety and reliability of Detroits existing renewable energy and waste infrastructure: the citys energy-from-waste facility (now Detroit Renewable Power) and Detroit Thermals underground steam loop, serving downtown and midtown Detroit.  Working cooperatively with the City of Detroit, the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324, Utility Workers Union of America, AFL, CIO Local 223, and The Detroit Edison Company (Detroit Edison), Detroit Renewable Energy has attracted $50 million in new investment to the city to upgrade and optimize the systems performance and environmental benefits.

Companies

  • Detroit Thermal LLC operates the citys underground steam loop, providing heating and cooling to more than 140 buildings in downtown and midtown Detroit.
  • Detroit Renewable Power LLC converts up to 3,300 tons per day of solid waste into electricity and steam, providing valuable renewable energy and conserving landfill space.
  • Hamtramck Energy Services LLC manages and staffs several private powerhouses for General Motors.
  • Detroit Renewable Cooling LLC Leads the charge to develop the City of Detroits district cooling system using renewable energy.

Renewable Energy

Not all energy is created equal.  Traditional means of generating energy through coal, imported oil and other fossil fuels carry with them the threat of global warming and dependence on other countries.  As Detroit moves into the 21st century, demand for energy by its residents and businesses is sure to grow, as will the need to reduce the citys carbon footprint.  Meeting these competing needs in a safe, environmentally friendly manner is our mission at Detroit Renewable Energy.  By converting the City of Detroits solid waste into electricity and steam were delivering the solution to two of Detroits most pressing needs:  a renewable, non-depletable source of clean energy and a responsible method of waste management. Its a win-win scenario for everyone--and the environment.
