Johnstons Propane has provided safe and reliable delivery of propane and propane related services to homes and businesses across Central New York for over 80 years.     Our goal is to provide the best service possible while maintaining affordable pricing. The Johnston family has been providing safe, reliable propane services to families and businesses since 1936.  We pride ourselves on our knowledgeable, personalized service that few other propane suppliers can match.  ​  Johnstons Propane evolved from Johnstons Hardware which was started in 1875.   After World War I, Johnstons Hardware began selling propane appliances such as cook stoves, water heaters and heating stoves.  They also sold the propane to fuel these appliances which was delivered in 100 lb cylinders to customers home by pick-up truck.      As propane became increasingly popular, Thomas Johnston Jr. decided to expand the propane side of the business.  In 1965 he purchased two small propane dealerships from Cayuga and Wayne Counties and starting expanding the business. The hardware store was closed shortly after with the new focus on propane services and delivery.

Propane has an excellent safety record due in large part to the stringent codes and regulations developed by the propane industry and the National Fire Protection Association.  At Johnstons Propane, safety is our highest priority.  ​  Propane is a hydrocarbon that is produced from both natural gas processing and crude oil processing.  It is nontoxic, colorless and odorless.  Manufacturers add a chemical odorant to give it a strong unpleasant smell similar to rotten eggs, a skunks spray, or a dead animal.  This helps alert customers to propane leaks, which can create a safety hazard.  Make sure everyone in your home or business can recognize the smell of propane.
