Our beginning dates all the way back to 1889 in Chicago. H.J. Troch began his water-wagon business, sprinkling the streets for money, keeping the dust down in front of merchants’ stores. Each generation of fathers passed his business down to his son. Bob, Sr., son of H.J. Troch, inherited the horse-drawn, water-wagon business and transformed it into a Mack Truck street-sprinkling business. By 1923, Robert, Sr., owned a fleet of Mack Trucks and made the bold move to the coal distribution business. In 1946, Robert, Sr., further expanded the business to include home and commercial heating oil. In its day, the R.W. Troch Oil Company was the largest heating oil company in the Chicagoland area.

Robert W. Troch, Jr. is the third generation of Troch’s and is the current Chairman of the Board of Bell Fuels, Inc. Bob, Jr.’s entrepreneurial spirit led Bell to a number of firsts in the petroleum industry:

• Retail Super Stations: In 1980, Bell introduced the largest service station in the United States, with 102 hoses; risky business in 1980.
• In today’s market, super-sized stations have become the mainstay of every major retail operator.
• Aviation Jet Fuel: Delivering jet fuel to the corporate likes of John Deere Co., Pfizer Corp., and Eli Lilly Co.; no other independent petroleum company delivered jet fuel to O’Hare Airport.
• Bell Premium D-2 ® Diesel Fuel R: Engineered to overcome weather-sensitive performance characteristics in diesel fuel. Bell Premium
• D-2 ® enhances the performance of fuel regardless of the crude oil feedstock or weather conditions. Bell invited the idea of a “finished” diesel fuel.
• Fuelman Fleet Credit Card: Bell becomes the first independent petroleum company in the Chicago and Milwaukee area to provide a national fuel accountability program for corporate fleets.
• Fuel Assurance Program: A guaranteed assurance of supply for emergency generators. This contractual supply program delivers emergency fuel within a given-time window.
• BioSmart ® Biodiesel: Bells Fuels was the first petroleum company in Illinois to commercially introduce soy biodiesel.

Gasoline All Grades

Gasoline, originally spelled “gasolene” was first coined as a word in 1865. It was initially used to describe any liquid offered for sale and used as a fuel to power an internal combustion engine. Gasoline is a volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixture blended from several product of natural gas liquids and crude oil/petroleum. Hydrocarbon molecules have different lengths, properties, and chemical reactions. The hydrocarbon chain, octane (having eight carbons) prevents the engine compression ratio from premature ignition (knocking). Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel. Why Ultra Low?

In an effort to provide environmental and health benefits by reducing the level of emissions from diesel exhaust filters for on-road engines manufactured in 2007 and newer and for off-road 2010 and newer. ULSD was transitioned so that diesel fuel would be compatible with the new clean diesel technology.

ULSD and Lubricity 

Sulfur is a natural lubricant in diesel fuel. Lubricity is a measure of the fuel’s ability to lubricate various parts of the engine and its fuel injection system. With the desulfurization of diesel fuel, many concerns regarding lubricity have been raised. Bell Fuels’ comprehensive Premium D-2 ® package provides high lubricity protection without the sulfur content. Our Premium D-2 ® additive is the verifiable answer.

Bell Fuels’ BioSmart ® BioDiesel

Bell Fuels worked with fuel engineers, biodiesel manufacturers, and the National BioDiesel Board, in order to develop our own level of expertise. This careful and sophisticated approach regarding bio-blending and distribution techniques enabled us to develop BioSmart ® BioDiesel. By adding our proprietary Bell Premium D-2 ® Diesel to biodiesel blends, we have developed a finished product that is superior to any other biodiesel blend on the market.

Super K-1 Kerosene

Bell Super K-1 Highly Refined Kerosene In the refining process of crude oil, petroleum is refined to break apart the complex mixture of hydrocarbons into various categories, or to separate or fraction the hydrocarbons through distillation. This separation, i.e. fraction, is reached through each hydrocarbon’s boiling point. Kerosene is grouped toward the higher end distillates.
