JOSEPH ÉLIE was created in 1893 in the Montreal neighbourhood of Pointe-Saint-Charles by a 19-year-old man named Joseph Élie. The original business consisted in a wood lot where one could buy coal, wood, hay, feed, and even chickens!In 1926, Joseph Élie sees the emerging petroleum product market as an opportunity to expand into the oil business.

Over the years, JOSEPH ÉLIE Ltd becomes a prosperous family business. In 1960, Gaston Élie (Josephs eldest son), sells the company to the Belgian company Petrofina. In 1981, JOSEPH ÉLIE Ltd becomes the property of Petro-Canada. Following a partial privatization in 1990 that lasted 12 years, the company returns to full Suncor (Petro-Canada) ownership in 2002.In 2009, Groupe Énergie BDL acquires Joseph Élie but the company remains affiliated to Suncor.

In 2012, the company buys Petro Montestrie, henceforth servicing the Quebec regions of Montérégie and Eastern Townships thanks to its network of strategic petroleum depots, and meeting customer needs in the towns of Granby, Drummondville, Sorel, Valleyfield, St-Hyacinthe and St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.Since 2016, Groupe Énergie BDL can rely on the adding of Petro Canada fuels for desserving the Greater Ottawa region, the eastern part of Ontario and the wonderful Ottawa valley
