MJM Electric Cooperative, Inc 264 N East St, Carlinville, Illinois, United States
Since Jan, 2017
MJM is a not-for-profit electric cooperative headquartered in Carlinville, Illinois. We provide electricity to more than 9,200 accounts and service 2,101 miles of power lines in Macoupin, Jersey, Montgomery, Bond, Fayette, Green, and Madison counties.
WHAT IS A COOPERATIVE?
Simply put, a cooperative is a not-for-profit business voluntarily owned and controlled by the people who use its services. Unlike investor-owned utilities, an electric cooperative is operated by and for people of the community. Its goal is to provide reliable power, not make a profit.
Electric cooperatives were originally formed to bring electricity to rural households. Investor-owned utilities were not interested in serving these households because there was little profit in doing so.
WHERE WE SERVE
MJM Electric is located in west-central Illinois. Our main territory stretches from western Jersey County, bordered by the Illinois River, across Macoupin County to eastern Montgomery County. We also service parts of neighboring Bond, Fayette, Green, and Madison counties.
OUR HISTORY
In 2014, MJM celebrated its 75th anniversary. To honor this occasion, a short film and a collection of articles were produced to tell MJM's story. Our members and employees have shared some of their memories of our Cooperative over the years. These tales reflect not only how MJM has changed through the decades but also how MJM has changed our rural community.
