About Company

ATCO Pipelines has a long history in the province of Alberta, in fact we can be considered the pioneers of our industry in this province.

Natural gas service began in Alberta in 1912. In just one year, the first natural gas delivery company, Canadian Western Natural Gas Company Limited (CWNG), was serving approximately 6,400 customers between Bow Island and Calgary. In 1923, people in the Edmonton area were using natural gas for heating and cooking, courtesy of Northwestern Utilities Limited (NUL). Eventually the service areas of these companies would expand to nearly every corner of the province.

In 1980, ATCO acquired controlling interest in Canadian Utilities.

By 1999, Canadian Western Natural Gas and Northwestern Utilities Ltd. had been working together for more than 75 years to deliver safe, reliable natural gas service to customers across Alberta. Canadian Western served customers in southern Alberta while Northwestern served those in northern Alberta. ATCO Pipelines was created in 1999 with the amalgamation and subsequent division of Canadian Western Natural Gas and Northwestern Utilities assets into separate transmission and distribution natural gas utilities.

ATCO Gas is now known as the distribution arm and ATCO Pipelines as the transmission arm of ATCO's natural gas Utilities group.

In 2012, ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd celebrated our Centenary with various contests, activities, and events throughout the province.

Today, high pressure pipelines belonging to ATCO Pipelines and our partner, Nova Gas Transmission Limited, make up the combined Alberta Integrated System.

ATCO Pipelines provides reliable and efficient delivery of natural gas and is committed to operational excellence and superior customer service while ensuring the safety of our employees and the public. We play an integral role in delivering natural gas in the Alberta marketplace, serving producers throughout the Western Canadian Sedimentary basin, as well as gas distribution companies and major industrial end users via the integrated Alberta natural gas transmission system. With offices in Calgary and Edmonton and facilities throughout the province, we employ about 400 people. ATCO Pipelines is part of the ATCO Group of Companies - an Alberta-based, worldwide organization with nearly 8,000 employees and assets of approximately $19 billion, ATCO is a diversified global corporation delivering service excellence and innovative business solutions in Structures & Logistics (workforce housing, innovative modular facilities, construction, site support services, and logistics and operations management); Electricity (power generation, distributed generation, and electricity distribution, transmission and infrastructure development); Pipelines & Liquids (natural gas transmission, distribution and infrastructure development, natural gas liquids storage, and industrial water solutions); and Retail Energy (electricity and natural gas retail sales).

How We Do Business

For more than 65 years, ATCO has placed integrity at the heart of how our company does business. Guided by ATCO Founder R.D. Southern’s Excellence Statement, our team of nearly 7,000 employees world-wide make decisions every day that contribute to the success of our company.

Our pursuit of excellence is governed by our core values – integrity, transparency, entrepreneurship, accountability, collaboration, perseverance and caring.

ATCO’s How We Do Business section provides an overview of the company’s key policies and outlines how employees can raise concerns.

ATCO Pipelines and Nova Gas Transmission Limited (NGTL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of TransCanada Corporation, examined their massive combined network of more than 31,000 kilometres of high-pressure transmission lines in Alberta to determine how they could create efficiencies – both for customers and their respective companies.

How does it work?

The arrangement involves the two companies combining physical assets under a single rates and services structure with a single commercial interface with customers but with each company separately managing assets within distinct operating territories throughout the province. This model ends dual tolling and operational redundancies which will result in more efficient regulatory and operations processes.

In October 2011, ATCO Pipelines and NGTL integrated their commercial operations under one set of rates and services. All contracts for natural gas service on the Alberta System reside with TransCanada.

The Asset Exchange is the remaining component of Integration and will see both companies exchange pipelines and facilities within defined geographic areas to help streamline operations for both companies and for customers. All regulatory approvals for this transfer are now in place and the physical swap will begin in phases this summer and be completed by the end of 2016.

What is involved in the Asset Exchange?

The Asset Exchange will be completed in four phases or “tranches” with the proposed completion in 2016.
