EWII Fuel Cells (formerly known as IRD Fuel Cell) is a high technology company that develops and produces fuel cell components. EWII Fuel Cells was established in 1996 by Dr. J.S Lundsgaard.
History
1995 – 2005: Focus on research and development
National and international research projects and product development with partners
2007: Expanding the stakeholder group
Three Danish utility companies (TRE-FOR, Energi Fyn, and Sydfyns Elforsyning) invest in the further development of IRD. The three companies now jointly own a 60% stake in IRD, which also counts APC/Schneider Electric among its shareholders.
2007: Commercial kick-off
IRD starts commercial production of MEAs, flow plates, and fuel cell stacks.
2008: Building a hydrogen village
IRD invests heavily in manufacturing facilities for fuel cell production by installing a hydraulic press for high volume flow plate manufacturing.
Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark visits Lolland in September 2008 to see the first of IRD’s combined heat and power plants being installed in Vestenskov, where a groundbreaking hydrogen community is being developed.
2009: Expanding in the US – affiliate IRD Fuel Cells, LLC
IRD acquires CABOT Fuel Cells’ MEA manufacturing production in Albuquerque, which was named “IRD LLC”, and operates as an independent US MEA manufacturing company.
2010: Commercial production of MEAs introduced to the market
Expanding the MEA product portfolios
2012: Hydrogen village version 2.0
IRD’s combined heat and power plants installed in Vestenskov are going into the next phase, increasing the number of installations from 5 to 35.
2014: TREFOR Acqusition
TREFOR A/S decided make IRD A/S their new TREFOR subsidiary. With this acqusition TREFOR hopes to help IRD’s on their vision to become a world renowned producer of fuel cell technology.
2015: New strategy
A new strategy is established with focus on component solutions provider.
IRD moved to new facilities in Odense and opened sales office in Palo Alto, CA.
2016: Changing the company’s name
IRD changes name to EWII Fuel Cell.
