About Company

What We Do

BIOFermTM Energy Systems is a Wisconsin-based anaerobic digestion company providing renewable energy and waste management solutions to North American operations. Committed to sustainable and economical organic waste diversion,  BIOFermTM’s digester technology harnesses biogas from fermenting organics—food waste, manure, biosolids, etc.—and converts it into valuable green energy, vehicle fuel, heat and organic products.

BIOFerm™ has over 400 anaerobic digester installations through the Viessmann Group.

Biogas produced can be combusted in a combined heat and power unit (CHP) to make renewable heat and electricity. Alternatively, biogas can be upgraded to renewable natural gas (RNG) quality for use as vehicle fuel in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG), or injection into the natural gas pipeline.

Biogas production, upgrading, and gas-to-grid injection facilities to be supplied from a single source through the Viessmann Group’s comprehensive product range. As a member of the Viessmann Group, BIOFermTM provides biogas upgrading technology in North America via Carbotech—one of the world’s leading suppliers of biogas pipeline injection systems and gas upgrading technology.

Carbotech has been a recognized pioneer in the biogas industry for over 40 years in the development, engineering and manufacturing of biogas upgrading systems and other gas processing. Today, over 900 of Carbotech’s Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) systems have been installed, including CNG and natural gas pipeline injection projects.

Our Story

Since 2007, BIOFermTM has been a member of the sustainability-driven Viessmann Group—world renowned manufacturers in the natural gas, oil, solar, and biogas sectors.

Founded in 1917, the Viessmann Group is a family owned business generating over $2.8 billion in annual international sales volume, and maintains a staff of approximately 11,400 employees. Viessmann has 27 production divisions in 11 countries; subsidiaries and representations in 74 countries; and 120 sales offices around the world. Sustainability is firmly embedded into the company’s guiding principles.

Unique Waste Management Needs

Different types of anaerobic digesters are better suited for different types of organic waste. Our industry experience at BIOFerm™ has taught us that it is never a “one-size-fits-all” solution; we ensure our clients get the digester  that best solves their organic waste needs.

We offer the complete range of anaerobic digestion technology: from low to high solids and from industrial-sized to small-scale. Click on a title to learn more about a specific system.

BIOFerm™ Dry Fermentation System

This AD system uses a unique dry fermentation technology that differs from traditional wet tank fermentation systems. Organic input remains stationary and requires little additional liquid.

BIOFerm™’s Dry Fermentation system utilizes a batch-style approach and can accept most any stackable waste, including large items (i.e. whole watermelons) and contaminated waste streams (i.e. non-organics). There is no need for a pumpable waste stream and there are no moving internal parts.

The BIOFerm™ Dry Fermentation System is ideal for operations with large amounts of food waste, yard clippings, dry manure on bedding and other high-solid organic waste. It is best suited for operations that process organic waste with a moisture content of less than 75%.

This type of waste  stream can typically be found on campuses, municipalities, composters, etc.

EUCOlino

Our small-scale digester, EUCOlino, is uniquely compact and expands the opportunity for energy generation to operations with limited footprints or smaller waste streams. The system ships as a complete unit, and is only slightly larger than a shipping container.

EUCOlino’s versatility allows it to process a wide range of feedstocks with varying solids content; each unit typically handles 1,000 – 6,000 tons of waste per year. Size and feedstock range make it ideal for many applications, such as: campuses, composters, breweries, wastewater treatment facilities, municipalities, dairies, zoos and more.

COCCUS®

COCCUS® is a complete-mix anaerobic digester to process large volumes of “wet” organic waste. The solids content of incoming waste for this system typically lies between 8-12%. COCCUS® digester tanks are available in different sizes and can be combined to meet individual the needs of individual projects; the organic waste stream range is approximately 7,000 tons per year and up, depending on tank size and expansions. COCCUS® applications include dairies, wastewater treatment plants, food processors, and more.

EUCO®

The EUCO® horizontal plug-flow digester is designed for input materials with a high solids content of around 17%. EUCO® has a rectangular footprint and a horizontal paddle mixer that runs the full length of the tank. This system is paired with a second-stage digester, such as the COCCUS®—EUCO® liquefies and hydrolyzes solid waste and provides the second-stage digester with well broken down material.

EUCO® is ideally paired with COCCUS® for processing wastewater sewage sludge, waste from food processors, breweries, and more.
