Company
Powerphase LLC™ is registered in Delaware, USA. The company was formed in 2012 to develop and commercialize cost efficient products for efficiently increasing gas turbine capacity and peak energy production capability. Some of the company’s products also include energy storage–utilizing features of the same patent-pending technology.
The company’s philosophy is that its’ products are all based on the utilization of compressed air while employing sound and proven technology in a unique way so as to maintain commercial levels of in-service reliability and availability.
The management team is comprised of people highly experienced in the area of gas turbines and power plants. With a combination of technical and business expertise, the senior management team averages well over 20 years of relevant experience at a variety of major gas turbine OEM’s and successful alternate suppliers, as well as major power plant owners.
Optimizing the World’s Gas Turbine Fleet.
Our Vision: Deliver high value products to our global customers that Optimize their gas turbine fleet.
An increasingly larger part of the power generating fleet is composed of simple cycle and combined cycle gas turbines. Due to the rapid increase in non-conventional gas resources in North America and elsewhere, these machines will provide a bigger share of both energy and capacity in the years to come.
However, these resources are not fully optimized. Before PowerphaseTM, the technologies available to increase installed capacity—particularly for hot days—were relatively limited in the amount of additional MW that could be delivered or came with a significant maintenance penalty, took up significant space, or use significant amounts of water.
By re-inventing gas turbine smarter peaking power technology, Powerphase™ has demonstrated that significant gas turbine smarter peaking power capability (10-20% of simple and combined cycle plant rating) can be retrofitted to any large industrial or aero-derivative gas turbine while improving efficiency at significantly less than the cost per kW of anything else available in its class. In addition, by taking advantage of some of the same technological innovations, 4 to 8 hours of low cost energy storage capability can also be installed in tandem with the capacity addition.
Innovation is in our DNA.
The company has patents pending for coverage in the United States and foreign countries on multiple key aspects of Powerphase’s technology, including the areas of gas turbine smarter peaking power and energy storage. The coverage for these patents relate to both announced and unannounced Powerphase™ products and applications. Additional filings are in preparation.
Technology
Gas Turbine Smarter Peaking Power–the principles
The power output capability of a given gas turbine plant is largely limited by the mass flow of air that can be delivered at a particular ambient temperature to the combustion and turbine sections. This is a function of the ambient temperature and humidity of the air. Many gas turbines are equipped with systems designed to add water vapor or cool the air going into the inlet of the compressor, or simply peak fire the turbine. Other systems inject large amounts of steam or liquid water between the compressor discharge and combustion sections of the machine, but these have not seen widespread adoption mainly due to the combination of high costs for water and increased turbine maintenance requirements. These systems also negatively affect the unit efficiency (heat rate) as energy that is required to vaporize the water is not recovered. These systems are useful but provide only a small, incremental increase in power. The TurbophaseTM compressed air smarter peaking power system overcomes these disadvantages by (1) avoiding the use of water or steam and (2) providing additional compressed air via an arrangement that is typically much more efficient and as clean as the gas turbine itself. This results in continuous smarter peaking power capability of up to 10-20% of the unit’s ISO rating and heat rate improvements of up to 7%–depending on the model of gas turbine. The system is compatible with existing inlet fogging and duct burner systems and can be applied to virtually any large gas turbine in simple cycle, cogen or combined cycle configurations.
Applications
Turbophase™ is fundamentally a gas turbine smarter peaking power and efficiency improvement technology that can incorporate energy storage as an option. In contrast, Powerphase+™ is fundamentally an energy storage technology that also incorporates efficiency improvement features.
SIMPLE CYCLE CONFIGURATIONS
In a simple cycle application the Turbophase™ system consists of an air compressor driven by either a reciprocating engine or a small gas turbine and a heat recovery system which is used to capture the prime mover exhaust heat and add it to the compressor discharge enabling the system to match the gas turbine’s compressor discharge temperature. Even on a 95F day the gas turbine can generate its ISO rated power at a better heat rate and at the same emissions rate as usual. The system’s benefits are available throughout a wide range of ambient temperatures–extending to well below ISO standard day conditions. The system is capable of continuous operation. Water usage can be limited to that required for lube oil coolers. The TurbophaseTM module is skid-mounted, relocatable and has a small footprint.
COMBINED CYCLE AND COGEN CONFIGURATIONS
On CC and cogen systems additional options are available to optimize the TurbophaseTM system. If desired, the system can be configured with a steam turbine drive for the air compressor which enables a zero incremental air emissions. Otherwise the configuration is similar to the simple cycle module except that heat recovery options also exist.
ENERGY STORAGE OPTIONS WITH Turbophase™
Where excess energy is available during off-peak periods it can be economically attractive to capture it by using an electrically driven compressor to fill compressed air tanks which are discharged during peak periods. This system, if using carbon-free renewable energy such as solar, wind or hydro, can also aid in integrating these resources into the grid and increase the usable energy capacity of the resource.
DEDICATED ENERGY STORAGE WITH Powerphase+™
In certain applications to simple cycle gas turbines the company’s Powerphase+™ system offer advantages over the Turbophase™ system. Since no additional prime mover is used the efficiency, capacity and other benefits of the company’s technology can be gained with zero incremental emissions. Powerphase+ always incorporates energy storage.
