CORPORATE PROFILE
Fuel Tech is a leading technology company engaged in the worldwide development, commercialization and application of state-of-the-art proprietary technologies for air pollution control, process optimization, combustion efficiency, and advanced engineering services. These technologies enable customers to operate efficiently in a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable manner.
Fuel Tech operates as a fully integrated company with a capital projects business to leverage its Air Pollution Control (APC) technologies, and a specialty chemicals business which builds upon its proprietary FUEL CHEM® processes. Both segments rely heavily on the Company’s unique ability to inject chemicals in combustion units, in precise concentrations and locations, to achieve a desired outcome.
COMPANY INFORMATION
Incorporated in 1987, Fuel Tech has over 200 employees, of which more than 25% of its full-time staff holds advanced degrees. The Company maintains Corporate Headquarters in Warrenville, Illinois, with additional domestic offices in: Durham, North Carolina, Stamford, Connecticut, and Westlake, Ohio. International offices are located in Milan, Italy and Beijing, China. Fuel Tech’s Common Stock is listed on the NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc. under the symbol "FTEK."
Technologies
The Company’s nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction technologies include low NOx burners, burner upgrades and over-fire air systems. In addition post-combustion NOx control systems include: NOxOUT® and HERT™ SNCR systems, Rich Reagent Injection (RRI) systems, and ASCR™ Advanced SCR systems. These technologies can be combined as part of an I-NOx™ Integrated NOx Control system. Our ULTRA™ ammonia generation process and XCAM™ systems to measure ammonia are technologies centered around SNCR and SCR applications. For particulate control, Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) technologies are applied through rebuild and retrofits to maximize performance to achieve regulatory compliance. In addition, Flue Gas Conditioning (FGC) technology through the use of sulfur trioxide and ammonia injection systems modify fly ash properties for collection by ESPs. These technologies have established Fuel Tech as a leader in NOx reduction, with installations on over 1,000 units worldwide, where coal, fuel oil, natural gas, municipal waste, biomass, and other fuels are utilized.
The Company’s FUEL CHEM® technology revolves around custom-designed applications of chemicals to improve the efficiency, reliability, fuel flexibility and environmental status of combustion units. These programs control slagging, fouling, corrosion, opacity and the formation of sulfur trioxide, ammonium bisulfate, particulate matter (PM2.5), as well as, carbon dioxide (CO2). This technology is applied to units where coal, heavy oil, biomass, and municipal waste are utilized. Our HClear™ programs target the reduction of HCl emissions.
We also provide a range of services, which include boiler testing, combustion optimization, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) management services, which includes ammonia injection grid design and tuning. In addition to flow corrective devices such as static mixers and our GSG™ Graduated Straightening Grid to help optimize flue gas distribution and mixing in both power plant and industrial applications.
Many of our application designs rely on our proprietary Company's exceptional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling capabilities, enhanced by our internally developed, high-end visualization software; this is in addition to our Physical (Experimental) Modeling of system designs. These capabilities, coupled with our innovative technologies and multi-disciplined team approach, enable us to provide practical solutions to our customers’ most challenging problems.

AIR POLLUTION CONTROL
Fuel Tech's APC technologies are installed worldwide on over 1,000 combustion units, including utility, industrial and municipal solid waste applications. Products include customized NOx control systems, which can reduce emissions from 30% - 85%, and proprietary urea-to-ammonia conversion technology, which can provide safe reagent for use in selective catalytic reduction systems.
Fuel Tech, a leader in the air pollution control (APC) business, has developed a variety of patented, state-of-the-art proprietary technologies that are focused on multi-pollutant control, specifically targeting the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) which are created from a variety of combustion sources utilizing a wide variety of fuel inputs. These technologies are detailed within the Air Pollution Control section of our website.
Fuel Tech's approach is to provide systems designed to achieve high levels of performance to meet customer expectations. Anticipated performance ranges are noted on each product page. Actual NOx emission reduction results will vary depending on the combustion unit design, specific operating characteristics, and the starting NOxemission levels of the combustion unit involved.
As a key participant in the APC business, Fuel Tech is a member of the following organizations
The Institute of Clean Air Companies (ICAC)
Council of Industrial Boiler Owners (CIBO)
American Coal Council (ACC)
ADVANCED PROCESS MODELING
Both Air Pollution Control and FUEL CHEM® applications involve optimizing the injection of the right amount of the right chemical under the right conditions to achieve desired performance levels. The tools used by our engineers to design these systems have grown from our first use of computational engineering software in 1987 to our sophisticated and always expanding suite of process modeling applications today.
Every Fuel Tech product installation has a custom process model supporting it.
A custom process model is used to simulate the conditions under which our product will operate. A CFD model generates predictions of operating temperatures, velocities and other variables from a virtual replication of real-world geometry and operating inputs. For NOxOUT® and TIFI® Targeted In-Furnace Injection™ applications, the 3D geometry of the combustor/boiler is generated. ULTRA™ models reflect the geometry and dynamics of the urea decomposition chamber and its connection to the customer’s ductwork. NOxOUT CASCADE®, and ASCR™ Advanced SCR models are focused on the distribution of ammonia slip entering a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst.
Once the base model is generated, it is visualized using our proprietary visualization software.
The software is designed to make explicit to the engineer the complex behaviors typical of combustion flows. Fuel Tech engineers can explore their models from any perspective with the software and return to them throughout the process design. Fuel Tech’s visualization software is also used to engage the customer in the design stage and tap into the expertise of their plant’s experts.
