To survive in today’s extremely competitive and tightly regulated transportation and energy environment, clean technology goals must be met. Now, more than ever, transportation manufacturers and energy producers are under intense pressure to develop and deliver higher-performance products with significantly reduced emissions. Relying solely on experimentation and measurement is costly, time-consuming and provides limited insight into new designs. The industry now recognizes that computer-based engineering simulation and modeling is not only critical to advancements in engine technology, it saves time and money in the development process.
Reaction Design helps customers reduce costs and meet environmental requirements through fast, accurate and reliable simulation. Our technology enables organizations to get the results they need, faster, using proven true combustion science. Click here to learn more about our simulation and modeling products.
Reaction Design’s world-class engineers, chemists and programmers have expertise that spans multi-scale engineering from the scale of a molecule through an entire engine. Reaction Design is headquartered in San Diego, Calif. and serves more than 400 customers in the commercial and government markets around the world, including many Fortune 1000 companies.
THE REACTION DESIGN STORY
Reaction Design was founded by Dr. David Klipstein whose vision of extending the power of complex chemistry simulation to industrial markets would enable the industry to replace costly experimental processes with fast and accurate computer simulation software.
Our Software
In 1997, Reaction Design became the exclusive developer and licensing partner for CHEMKIN, the gold standard for modeling gas-phase and surface chemistry created at Sandia National Laboratories. CHEMKIN originated from Sandia's research work in combustion and has enabled significant strides in the modeling of a variety of complex chemical processes. It is the software of choice for engineers and scientists involved in modeling chemically reacting flows. CHEMKIN has also become an important educational tool in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and chemistry curricula.
Today, Reaction Design's product offerings have expanded to include a comprehensive software suite that enables engineers to evaluate performance from the scale of a molecule through an entire engine. With Reaction Design’s software products, designers have access to unprecedented predictive simulation capabilities to help them solve complex design problems with accuracy and fast Time-to-Solution.
Model Fuels Consortium
In 2005, Reaction Design launched the Model Fuels Consortium (MFC), an organization comprising global leaders in transportation and energy production including Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Cummins, Dow Chemical Company, Ford Motor Company, GE Energy, General Motors, Honda, l'Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP), Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Petrobras, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Saudi Aramco, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen. The MFC was formed in response to the growing pressures on engine and fuel manufacturers worldwide to lower greenhouse gas and toxic pollutant emissions.
Throughout its seven-year tenure, the MFC engaged industry luminaries to accelerate the development of software tools and chemistry models that would enable the design of cleaner burning, more efficient engines and fuels, including Chief Technical Advisor Dr. Charlie Westbrook, widely regarded as a pioneer in combustion modeling, Prof. Anthony Dean from Colorado School of Mines (formerly of Exxon), Prof. William Green from MIT, Prof. Mitsuo Koshi from University of Tokyo, Prof. Ulrich Maas from Karlsruhe University and Prof. Hiromitsu Ando from Fukui University, formerly chief executive scientist of Mitsubishi Motors.
