About Company

Versalence provides a variety of services for government and privately owned hydro-electric generation units.

We offer the clients a vast array of generation industry experience on control systems manufactured for over 100 years. We have a proven track record of project management, project engineering, training, testing, repair, maintenance, phone and field troubleshooting.

The control system, including the governor, affects many aspects of generation and substantial knowledge has been gained through working with the entire system.

Our goal is to increase unit reliability and stability through proper maintenance, tuning and testing of existing controls during planned outages.

All of our services are interactive. Organizations will benefit with an increased understanding of how the controls work, from an overview for management and engineering to hands-on for people in the plant.

Versalence has qualified staff on call ready and willing to work as needed for multiple vintages of control systems.

Versalence's support services include phone assistance with troubleshooting control systems or on-site services if the problem cannot be solved over the phone. Phone support is free of charge for minor issues.

Support also includes on-site overhaul and maintenance of multiple vintages of control systems including mechanical, analog and digital controls .

Unit Testing

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has documented a substantial decrease in frequency response on the grids, and is projecting a further decrease with the addition of non-speed regulating generation, including wind. They are in the process of developing new standards that will be enforceable for units capable of providing frequency control.

The new standards will address three criteria; rate, amount and duration. The first two apply directly, and the third indirectly, to governors. There are several elements contributing to poor performance in these areas that can be easily corrected. Versalence provides services to test these criteria using the existing IEEE, ASME and NERC standards.

Compliance is often the primary goal, however, there are ancillary benefits resulting from this testing. The primary purpose of the governor is to provide controlled compensation for inherent characteristics of the unit, including machine time and water time. It is capable of compensating, up to a point, for other non-desirable traits such as deadband, friction and leakage. Properly testing the governors can identify issues that could affect the long term reliability of the unit.

While the issue of improving frequency response on a large scale is daunting, addressing one unit at a time is part of the solution.
