Canada Composting Inc390 Davis Drive Suite 301 , Newmarket, , Ontario, Canada
Since Mar, 2015
Since 1992
As a privately held company located in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, we hold the exclusive Canadian and USA license rights to a European developed, commercially proven AD technology known as BTA Process .This North American patented solution was developed and commercialized in the early 1980's and since then it has been successfully implemented across a range of countries. The system is designed specifically to process the organic fraction of MSW generated in our homes, businesses and industry. Today, more than 110 million Nm3 of biogas are annually produced at more than 45 BTA facilities, which corresponds to the energy equivalent of approximately 70 million Nm3 of natural gas.
Corporate Vision
Our corporate vision is to sustainably use the organic fraction of our wastes to produce clean, renewable bioenergy and a variety of other beneficial use products.
Corporate Mission
Our corporate mission is to use a partnership strategy to design, build, operate, own, sell and finance, in any combination, processing solutions that recover the resources inherent in the organic fraction of MSW.
Business Focus
A proven track record combined with an unequaled knowledge of the critical success factors reinforce our ability to effectively deliver all required services to meet a project's objectives. Capitalizing on our partnering philosophy allows us to combine complementary skills and experience in all the facets of organics project development and mitigates the risk for all parties to the project.
Our Capabilities
Competencies
We have in-house competency and strategic partner resources to deliver value to the projects in which we participate, with deep knowledge, experience and skills in:
Practical Experience
Our practical experiences with the three diversion-to-conversion bioenergy facilities we have deployed in North America has allowed us to understand the critical success factors and considerations and develop practical approaches to the following realities in diverting and converting organics:
- The organic fraction of the waste stream is a difficult element to deal with
- Partnership approaches work best to deliver workable solutions
- All elements of the waste supply chain are affected
- The quality of feedstock is impacted by human behaviour
- Local market conditions and characteristics dictate the plant configuration
Our Qualifications
Lessons Learned
Our group has globally developed over 45 large-scale bioenergy facilities that use MSW organics as the feedstock. Our experiences can be translated into lessons we have learned and the understanding of the critical success factors needed in a successful MSW organics project. The key lessons we have learned include:
- All parties in a project must have realistic expectations based on practical experience
- The client/user should be a partner, as opposed to a buyer
- The generator must be better educated as to the diversion program requirements
- Fully implemented diversion programs will not produce the same results as pilot programs
- Expect challenges and stay the course and plan to success
- Have plans B & C for critical operating elements
- Transferring design & operating knowledge from Europe was difficult and time consuming
- Design building emissions management systems to higher tolerances
- More effective placement of equipment to support required throughput & efficiencies
- Changes to operating procedures to support processing & equipment maintenance
North American Experience
With our partners, we have developed North America's first two commercial scale AD plants.
1. City of Toronto, Ontario (Dufferin Transfer Station)
Along with three other joint venture partners we designed, built and have always operated an AD plant owned by the City of Toronto. As of September 2012 this plant has processed over 307,000 metric tonnes of residential source separated organics (SSO) that are curbside collected from over 510,000 single-family homes and thousands of commercial businesses. The facility is being expanded to double design capacity to 50,000 metric tonnes annually.
2. Newmarket, Ontario
This plant began operations in mid-2000 and is designed to process source separated organics (SSO) and organic rich waste streams from municipal and private waste generators as well as waste management service providers. On-site cogeneration engines use the biogas produced in the process to generate power and heat for the plant and surplus power for distribution to the local electrical grid. This plant was sold in 2003 and is now owned and operated by a waste management services provider.
