AB AKRON-maskiner from 1935 onwards

From bicycles to cutting machines

In 1935 the two brothers Ake and Helge Abelsson started their bicycle repair shop on the parental farm in Jarpas situated on the fertile Gothic plain between Lidkoping and Vara. They were young men with ambitions; cars and tractors soon replaced the bikes.

The brothers didn’t sit to rest with the repairs. In 1939 they built a new workshop and started producing equipment for agriculture. The first major series production was handheld tools, including hoes. Peak production reached approximately 35,000 tools annually.

With the mechanization of farming came a change of direction; 1946 a new product was introduced, the cutting machine for straw and forage. Although the cutting machines became a bit of a mayfly, production ceased as early as the 1950s, it became very popular and spare parts were sold for more than thirty years.

The company's products were already in the beginning of the 1950s marketed under the name AKRON. In 1963 the brothers took the plunge and changed the company name to AKRON-maskiner. It was easy to acquire a new business sign; An old MONARK-sign (= Swedish bicycle brand) from the old workshop was brought forward and the cracked letter M put aside. The remaining characters were then mixed to form the proper sign.

50 years with the augers, fans and dryers

In the mid 1950s, development of a number of products, that AKRON still markets today, began. Akron was early in the manufacture of augers, the first were presented in 1954.

The manufacture of propeller fans, another example remaining in the current product range, started 1957. The fans gave knowledge of airflow and heat, it took only one year until the first grain dryer saw daylight in 1958. Still today complete drying and storage systems are delivered from AKRON-maskiner.

In 1969 Ake and Helge sold the business. Sven-Johan Persson who, with his expertise in agricultural engineering, had helped the brothers with product development was the natural buyer and has since run the company.

Electric motors were needed for the machines. At peak level AKRON imported about 50,000 motors annually. The import of motors was managed by the subsidiary Jansin AB for approximately 25 years. 1979 the company Fors Port AB, also in Jarpas, was purchased and AKRON has since provided the market with doors for different purposes.

During a period in the 1960s - and '70s field machinery was imported. The imports ceased soon but in 1988 the company Rekordverken Sweden AB was bought by AKRON. Rekordverken, with straw choppers and chaff spreaders manufactured for virtually all the world’s combine manufacturers, is literally on the ground.

2000s AKRON - an industry standing on several legs

Today’s AKRON maskiner, the result of decades of healthy initiatives, constant adjusting to the market and hard work, little resembles the bicycle work shop from 1935.

Today there is a number of different business areas in addition to grain handling and feed preparation:
• Products for bio fuel handling has grown out of the product range for grain handling.
• The fans have been further developed for various industrial applications.
• One of the country’s largest stocks of industrial motors is situated in Jarpas.
• Cargo carriers, for asphalt and gravel among others, are manufactured.
