REMTECH is a company with offices in France and the U.S.A. which manufactures and maintains the REMTECH DOPPLER SODAR(s) and the RASS (Radio Acoustic Sounding System).
Our DOPPLER SODAR systems measure remotely a vertical profile of wind speed, direction, thermal stratification and turbulence parameters (sigma W, sigma Theta) up to 400, 700 and 3,000 meters average altitude range depending on Sodar model.
They are ideally suited for wind energy site assessment, airport safety (wind shear detection), for air pollution control and forecast, site surveys (power plants).
Military organizations are using the SODAR in programs for weapons development, parachuting, landing on aircraft carriers as well as flight tests in general.
Our RASS remotely measures temperature profiles in the atmosphere . It can be used in environmental studies and study of telecommunication network disturbances due to atmospheric conditions. It comes as an option to our long range SODAR and can provide measurements up to 1,500 meters above ground.
REMTECH was started in 1982. It quickly became the number 1 company for sodars (acoustic wind profilers) and remains so. The only reason is constant innovation leading to smaller, more efficient and fully reliable instruments. REMTECH was the first company to :
- use digital hardware (1982) for generating any kind of emitted signals.
- process FFT’s (Fast Fourier Transforms) by software only. No dedicated inflexible and expensive hardware.
- use multifrequency coding techniques. First trials in 1982 with 2 frequencies and now up to 15 frequencies on each of the two symetrical tilted beams in the same vertical plane and this for one pulse (US Patent N° 5,521,883).
- introduce real flat phase array antennas (1990) and is still the only company capable of that. No need for cumbersome and heavy acoustic screens.
- introduce long range Sodars (1996) which are a cost efficient alternative to Radar and Lidar wind profilers.
- introduce very unique signal processing techniques such as noise subtraction in the Fourier domain, “apparent” angle of arrival, phase gradient versus frequency, which are equivalent to a dramatic emission power increase.
This allows us to introduce our PA-XS sodar which weighs only 7.3 Kg (16 pounds) and reaches an altitude range which is higher than the other systems with sodars weighing over 450 Kg ! (1000 pounds).
REMTECH now has delivered more than 500 systems in more than 50 different countries.
APPLICATIONS
The REMTECH sodar can be used in a variety of meteorological monitoring applications. Several of these are listed below.

. Land and sea breezes
. Urban heat island circulations
. Topographically induced flows
. Nocturnal inversion formation and decay
. Planetary boundary layer research
. Transport of elevated pollutant plumes
. Clear air turbulence studies
. Thunderstorm outflows
. Vertical temperature structure
. Dose calculation forecasts of nuclear accidents
. Toxic chemical spill response training
SUPPORT
REMTECH warrants its systems for three years from date of purchase. In the unlikely event a failure occurs REMTECH maintains a stock of replacement electronic modules which can be shipped overnight for immediate exchange and replacement. The replacement module is 20 cm x 20 cm x 15 cm and weighs 3.1 kg . It includes the imbedded computer. It is easily replaceable. REMTECH antennae typically last more than 15 years and do not require repair.
After the warranty period an electronic module exchange may be made for a nominal repair charge.
