Senegal’s First Offshore Oilfield Started Production

The project comprises of a total of 23 production wells at an investment of around $5.2 billion.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Woodside Energy announced that it has started production at Senegal’s first offshore oil project. With this, Senegal has become a crude-producing nation for the first time.

Commenting on the development, Meg O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer, Woodside stated that the extraction of oil from the Sangomar field is a key milestone. The offshore oilfield is expected to produce approximately 100,000 b/d of crude, thus contributing big to the Senegalese economy. The oil from Sangomar field will be mainly exported. The field contains natural gas as well. Meg O’Neill added that it is a historic day for both Woodside and Senegal.

The project comprises of a total of 23 production wells at an investment of around $5.2 billion. In the first phase, it plans to develop 12 wells. The crude oil loading will take place from the Leopold Sedar Senghor FPSO, nearly 100 kilometres offshore the capital city of Dakar. The unit’s estimated storage capacity is 1.3 million barrels.

Woodside holds 82% stake in the project, with the remaining 18% held by Senegalese petroleum company Petrosen.

This, along with upcoming projects will transform the oil and gas industry into a major contributor of revenue to the country’s economy
