Duke Energy Unveiled Blueprint for N.C. Natural Gas Facility
SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Charlotte-headquartered electric power and natural gas holding company, Duke Energy Corporation unveiled blueprint for its upcoming natural gas facility in Catawba County, North Carolina.
The company had submitted an application to the N.C. Utilities Commission late last week seeking construction of a new plant. The proposed plant will have two units, with a combined capacity of 850 MW. The new plant will supplement the company’s existing Marshall Steam Station, which runs on both coal and natural gas. The new plant aims to help the company progress on its goal of systematic retirement of coal capacity.

Further to approval by the Commission, the company plans to commence construction works on the plant in Q3 2026, with completion expected by around early-2029. The plant will have a lifetime of around 35 years.
Duke Energy, in its revised energy outlook published recently, had stated that its natural gas initiatives are being driven by unprecedented energy demand across the country. In addition to the Catawba County natural gas plant, the company intends to build another plant in Person County, which will be connected to a proposed pipeline which will be operated by Dominion Energy.
The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
