SEATTLE (Oil Monster):  Norway-based energy giant Equinor has collaborated with leading industrial gases and engineering company Linde on a low-carbon initiative. The project development agreement reached between the two companies aims to set up an innovative initiative to reform natural gas into hydrogen in the Netherlands.

Accordingly, Equinor will make use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in order to reform natural gas from the Norwegian continental shelf to hydrogen. Nearly 95% of the captured carbon dioxide will be stored safely offshore Norway. Line will be responsible for construction as well as operation of the hydrogen production and carbon capture and transfer facility, which it will co-own along with Equinor.

As per plan, a hydrogen plant will be established in the Eemshaven industrial area. The plant will be connected to onshore pipelines in the Netherlands and Germany. The project combines Equinor’s proficiency in energy marketing and CCS with Linde’s expertise in developing and operating hydrogen and carbon capture plants. The plant is expected to commence production in late 2028.

The project will account for 2.3% of Europe’s existing grey hydrogen demand and 0.24% of the projected clean hydrogen market share in 2050.
