EIA: MENA Region Supplied One-Third of Global LNG Exports

Algeria’s LNG exports have remained more or less stable over the past decade. Egypt exported 0.9 Bcf/d in both 2021 and 2022.

SEATTLE (Oil Monster): The countries in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) supplied nearly one-third of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports during the previous year, said the latest data released by the International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers (GIIGNL).

The share of the global LNG exports from exporters in the region had recorded sharp decline from 47% in 2013 to about 30% in 2020, mainly on account of rising LNG exports from countries such as Australia and the USA. The major exporting countries in the MENA region include Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Algeria and Egypt.

The major exporting country in 2022 was Qatar, which accounted for almost 70% of exports from the region, with exports averaging at 10.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) during the past decade. The second and third largest exporters were Oman and the UAE, with average exports over the last ten years of 1.2 Bcf/d and 0.7 Bcf/d respectively.

Algeria’s LNG exports have remained more or less stable over the past decade. Egypt exported 0.9 Bcf/d in both 2021 and 2022.

The primary destination of LNG exports from the MENA region is South Asia and East Asia, which received nearly 65% of the region’s LNG exports in 2022. The share of exports from the region to South Asia and East Asia has remained mostly consistent over the past decade, said the report.
